What is a Web browser? It is a software application which helps internet visitor view the content display obtained from web servers. They are a kind of intermediaries between the user and the Web servers available in the World Wide Web. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox are the two major web browsers that we use today. Earlier it was a monopoly game by Microsoft. These days’ web browsers offer the multipurpose and multi-pronged applications to the web visitor.
How do the web browsers mediate between the user and the web servers? The HTTP (Hyper text transfer protocol) is used by the web browsers to get web pages. The locations (like our Home address) are identified by the URLs (Uniform Resource Code). There are other means of support such as FTP, Gopher etc, for these web browsers.
A web page accepts a HTML file format and is identified in the HTTP protocol using MIME content type. Other formats such as JPEG, PNG or Gif are also supported by these browsers. Usage of plug-ins extends further support. The combination of HTTP and URL enables web page designers to embed images, animations, video, sound and streaming into a web page and make them accessible.
Constant research and development had made the HTML to grow into some complex versions from the era of simple HTML. These days web browsers support both HTML and XHTML. Microsoft Front page and Macromedia Dreamweaver are being used by the websites .They are in WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML format.
Additional components are used to support Usent news, Internet Relay Chat and e-mail. Several other protocols such as NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) and POP (Post Office Protocol) are also being supported
Every web browser differentiates itself from one another through the features and techniques provided by them which were not heard of in earlier days of internet browsing. There is a long list of features that we will not discuss here.
Off late web browsers have converted themselves to be user-friendly when users surf the net. They help the visitors through these technological tools to view contents from different file formats. They allow to interact with other websites by way of viewing, downloading, uploading and streaming of data. To be more society oriented they do the job of protecting the web site visitors from unwanted advertisements, spywares and phishing attempts. More than these, they have features of auto-fill. They also manage passwords and download.
Web browsing off late has become a safe and pleasurable experience. They are not working as a bridge between the user and the Web server. They logically work and interpret things that are really desired by the user.
